About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
Does every patient need surgery in prostate cancer, and when is active surveillance appropriate?
No; most prostate cancers are slow-growing. In low-risk cases active surveillance (follow-up with regular PSA, MRI and biopsy) may be the best approach. The decision is made by the board.
How do my Gleason score / ISUP grade and PSA value affect my treatment decision?
These values determine your risk group (low/intermediate/high) and directly affect the choice between surveillance, surgery or radiotherapy.
What is the difference between robotic radical prostatectomy and open surgery?
Robotic surgery offers a small incision, minimal bleeding, millimetric precision and faster recovery; it facilitates the nerve-sparing technique.
How does nerve-sparing surgery preserve erectile function and urinary continence?
Removal is performed while preserving, as much as possible, the nerve bundles around the prostate responsible for erectile function and urinary continence.
Surgery or radiotherapy: which is more suitable for me and how is it chosen?
Both can be effective in localized disease; the choice is made by the board according to risk group, stage, age, overall health and patient preference.
Why is a PSMA PET-CT taken and how does it differ from standard imaging?
PSMA PET-CT is prostate-specific and detects spread and recurrence more sensitively than standard imaging, clarifying staging.
When is hormone therapy (androgen deprivation) needed and what are its side effects?
It may be needed with radiotherapy in intermediate-high risk or in advanced disease; side effects are evaluated and managed by your physician.
Which patients are suitable for Lu-177 PSMA theranostic therapy?
It is a targeted option in advanced, PSMA-positive and castration-resistant disease; eligibility is assessed by the board.
How is PSA followed after treatment, and what is done if recurrence occurs?
You are followed with regular PSA measurements; if it rises, imaging and additional treatment are planned by the board.
How does the process work for patients coming from abroad?
It starts with file sharing and remote assessment; visa, transfer, accommodation and medical interpreter support are provided.
