Frequently asked questions
Is every nodule detected in the lung cancer?
No. The majority of nodules detected on lung imaging are benign. Scars due to previous infections are common. In the evaluation, the size of the nodule, its border features, the patient's age and smoking history are considered together. In most cases, monitoring is done by imaging at regular intervals.
Is shortness of breath permanent after lung surgery?
It depends on the amount of tissue removed and preoperative respiratory capacity. For this reason, respiratory function tests are performed before the surgery and the extent to which the intervention will affect the capacity is calculated. Postoperative breathing exercises and early mobilization support recovery.
Why is mediastinoscopy necessary?
Imaging cannot always show conclusively whether there is involvement of the lymph nodes in the middle part of the chest cavity. Mediastinoscopy allows taking samples from these nodes. The result is important as it determines whether the patient will be taken directly into surgery or another treatment will be applied first.
Does lung collapse recur?
Relapse may occur, and the risk is higher especially in cases that arise without an obvious cause. In recurrent cases or when air leakage persists, surgical treatment is considered. Quitting smoking is the most basic recommended step to reduce the risk of recurrence.
