Tinnitus is the hearing of a buzzing, ringing or whistling sound in the ear or head without an external sound source. It is common and often associated with the auditory system.
In the evaluation, hearing is measured first; because tinnitus often accompanies hearing loss. Earwax plugs, middle ear problems, long-term exposure to noise, and certain medications are investigated. Further examination may be required in cases of unilateral or pulse-compatible tinnitus.
Treatment is directed at the cause. If you have hearing loss, a hearing aid can reduce the discomfort of tinnitus. Sound enrichment methods, improving sleep patterns, and avoiding triggers such as caffeine and noise are recommended.
