About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
How is a spinal tumor distinguished from disc herniation pain?
Tumor pain typically worsens at night and at rest, is progressive and may be accompanied by neurological loss; definitive distinction is made with MRI and, if needed, biopsy.
Why is spinal stabilization needed?
When a tumor weakens the vertebral bone, there is a risk of collapse and cord compression; instrumentation reinforces the spine, reduces pain and preserves mobility. The need is assessed at the council.
What is spinal SBRT and when is it preferred?
It is stereotactic radiotherapy delivering a high, millimetrically focused dose to the spinal lesion; especially in vertebral metastases and selected primary tumors, it can be delivered in few sessions while sparing the cord.
Is surgery or radiotherapy done first?
The order is not fixed; it is set at the multidisciplinary council according to cord compression, stability, tumor type and pathology/molecular profile. Often decompression/stabilization is followed by SBRT.
Can a tumor within the spinal cord (intramedullary) be removed?
Selected intramedullary tumors can be removed with neuromonitoring and microsurgery while preserving function; the goal is maximal safe resection, decided at the council.
What should I do if I lose bladder/bowel control?
This is an emergency warning sign of cord/nerve compression; it must be assessed without delay, and urgent decompression is planned by the council if needed.
Are there bone-strengthening treatments for vertebral (bone) metastasis?
Yes; bone-protective drugs, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty for compression fractures and stabilization when needed are planned together with SBRT by council decision.
Will I be able to walk after treatment, will my function recover?
A priority of treatment is to preserve and where possible improve function; outcome depends on tumor type, duration of compression and baseline function, and rehabilitation supports the process.
What documents are needed for a second opinion?
Current spinal MRI/CT images (raw data if possible), any primary cancer and pathology/molecular reports, operative notes and current medication list.
How does the process work for international patients?
Your file is evaluated remotely, the council shares a preliminary plan and a transparent offer; visa, transfer, accommodation and medical interpreter support are provided.
