About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
What causes mesothelioma, and is asbestos the only cause?
Mesothelioma is strongly linked to asbestos exposure; occupational and environmental exposure is the main cause. In some cases a familial/genetic predisposition also plays a role.
What is the difference between pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma?
Pleural mesothelioma arises from the pleura around the lungs, while peritoneal mesothelioma develops from the abdominal lining. Symptoms and treatment approach differ accordingly.
Why is the histologic subtype (epithelioid / sarcomatoid / biphasic) important?
The histologic subtype (epithelioid/sarcomatoid/biphasic) affects the disease course and treatment choice; the plan is therefore set by the board according to subtype.
Is surgery always possible, and which operation is performed (pleurectomy-decortication / extrapleural pneumonectomy)?
Surgery may not suit every patient; pleurectomy-decortication is used in eligible patients and extrapleural pneumonectomy in select fit patients. The board decides.
What is multimodal therapy and why is it necessary?
Multimodal therapy combines surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy in a suitable order. Because mesothelioma can be aggressive, these are planned together.
What is the role of immunotherapy in mesothelioma treatment?
Immunotherapy, as part of modern systemic regimens (often combined with chemotherapy), contributes to bringing the disease under control.
What is HIPEC in peritoneal mesothelioma and how is it performed?
HIPEC is heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy delivered into the abdominal cavity after cytoreductive surgery has reduced disease burden.
How are breathlessness and pleural fluid (fluid around the lung) managed?
Pleural fluid and breathlessness are controlled with methods such as pleurodesis and an indwelling pleural catheter.
What is long latency; when should I get checked after asbestos contact?
Mesothelioma can appear years, often decades, after asbestos exposure. Those with prior asbestos contact should have regular check-ups as advised by a physician.
How is follow-up done after treatment?
Follow-up continues with post-treatment imaging, respiratory rehabilitation and regular monitoring via tele-oncology.
How does the process work for patients coming from abroad?
You can share your file remotely and receive a board review and a transparent offer; visa, transfer, accommodation and medical interpreter support are provided.
