About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
How and who decides on my breast cancer treatment?
The decision belongs to the multidisciplinary oncology council, not a single physician; the tumor’s type, stage and molecular profile are evaluated together to decide the treatment methods and their sequence.
Can my breast be preserved, or is mastectomy required?
Depending on the tumor’s size, location and extent, breast-conserving surgery is possible in many suitable cases; when needed, mastectomy and reconstruction options are evaluated together with the council.
Why do hormone receptor and HER2 status affect my treatment?
These markers reveal the tumor’s molecular subtype; they guide different approaches such as hormone therapy for hormone-positive tumors and targeted therapy for HER2-positive tumors.
What is sentinel (guard) lymph node biopsy?
It evaluates the first axillary lymph node where the tumor might spread; if clear, broad lymph node clearance and its associated side effects can be avoided.
Do I have surgery first or chemotherapy first?
In some cases, neoadjuvant chemotherapy before surgery may be preferred to shrink the tumor; the council decides this sequence based on the tumor’s subtype and stage.
There is breast cancer in my family; should I have a BRCA test?
In cases of family history or early-age diagnosis, BRCA1/BRCA2 testing and genetic counseling may be recommended; the result can affect both treatment and the screening and risk-reduction plan.
When is breast reconstruction performed?
In suitable patients, in the same session as mastectomy or after treatments are completed; reconstruction options with an implant or your own tissue are planned together with the council.
What documents should I have for a second opinion?
Your mammography/MRI images, biopsy and pathology report (including ER/PR and HER2), any PET-CT, and prior treatment summaries are sufficient for the council.
Is radiotherapy required for every patient?
No; it is recommended particularly after breast-conserving surgery and in selected cases to reduce recurrence risk, and the council decides on its necessity.
I am coming from abroad; how does the process work?
Evaluation begins remotely with your file; after the council opinion and offer are shared, the process is planned with visa, transfer, accommodation and medical translator support.
