About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
What is the difference between non-small cell (NSCLC) and small cell (SCLC) lung cancer?
NSCLC is more common; surgery, SBRT and molecular-profile-based targeted therapy/immunotherapy come to the fore. SCLC is generally managed with chemotherapy and radiotherapy/immunotherapy.
Why is molecular / biomarker testing (EGFR, ALK, ROS1, PD-L1) so important?
In NSCLC, EGFR, ALK, ROS1 and PD-L1 tests directly guide the choice of targeted therapy and immunotherapy; treatment is personalized based on these results.
For early-stage lung cancer, surgery or SBRT: which is more suitable for me?
The decision is made by the multidisciplinary board according to stage, lung function and overall health. Robotic/VATS surgery may suit operable disease, SBRT inoperable early-stage disease.
What is SBRT and in how many sessions is it delivered?
SBRT is curative-intent stereotactic body radiotherapy given in a few sessions for early-stage inoperable NSCLC, delivered with high accuracy on the TrueBeam LINAC.
What is the difference between robotic / VATS surgery and open thoracotomy?
Robotic and VATS minimally invasive approaches offer small incisions, less pain and faster recovery than open thoracotomy. Suitability for each patient is evaluated by the board.
What is the difference between targeted therapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy?
Targeted therapy uses smart drugs aimed at specific mutations like EGFR/ALK/ROS1; immunotherapy directs the immune system; chemotherapy gives systemic control. Choice depends on PD-L1 and clinical status.
What are EBUS and PET-CT staging, and why are they done?
PET-CT shows spread and metabolic activity, while EBUS samples mediastinal lymph nodes. Together they complement each other for accurate staging.
Can lung cancer be treated without surgery?
Yes; non-surgical treatment is possible, with SBRT in early stages and targeted therapy, immunotherapy or chemotherapy in advanced stages. The board tailors the approach per patient.
How is follow-up done after treatment, and what is done if recurrence occurs?
Follow-up continues with post-treatment imaging, respiratory rehabilitation and, when needed, tele-oncology. If recurrence is detected, the plan is re-evaluated by the board.
Is smoking cessation support part of the treatment process?
Yes; smoking cessation support is offered as a natural part of the treatment process, alongside respiratory rehabilitation.
How does the process work for patients coming from abroad?
Your file is assessed remotely from imaging and reports, and a personalized offer is provided. International patient support covers visa, transfer, accommodation and interpreter services.
