About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
What is a varicocele and why should it be treated?
A varicocele is the abnormal dilation of the veins surrounding the testicles (pampiniform plexus); it is treatable because it can cause pain, testicular shrinkage and impaired sperm parameters.
How does a varicocele cause infertility?
Pooling of blood in the dilated veins can disturb testicular temperature and microenvironment, adversely affecting sperm count, motility and morphology.
How does microsurgical varicocelectomy differ from other methods (classic open, laparoscopic, embolization)?
With the operating microscope even small veins are seen and ligated while the artery and lymphatics are preserved, providing a low recurrence and low hydrocele rate (qualitative).
Why is using an operating microscope important; does it reduce recurrence and hydrocele risk?
High magnification allows dilated veins to be distinguished from the artery and lymphatics and ligated individually, aiming to reduce recurrence and hydrocele risk (qualitative).
What is the difference between the subinguinal and inguinal approaches?
The subinguinal approach is performed just below the groin crease and the inguinal approach at the level of the inguinal canal; the choice is based on anatomy.
When and how much do sperm parameters improve after surgery?
Improvement in sperm parameters usually develops over months and is monitored with follow-up semen analyses; the degree of improvement varies by individual.
Is it a day-case procedure, how long is recovery and when can I return to work?
Thanks to the small subinguinal incision it is usually a day-case procedure; a fast return to daily life is possible after a short rest.
What are the possible risks of varicocele surgery (hydrocele, recurrence, testicular artery injury)?
Possible risks include hydrocele, recurrence and testicular artery injury; the microsurgical approach aims to keep these risks low (qualitative).
If my sperm parameters are normal, should I have surgery just for pain?
In patients with persistent scrotal pain or heaviness and normal sperm parameters, microsurgery aimed at relieving complaints may be considered; the decision is individual.
How does the process work for international patients?
The process begins with sharing your file and semen analysis and includes end-to-end international patient support such as visa, transfer, accommodation and medical interpreter.
