About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
Who is epilepsy surgery considered for?
Drug resistance is accepted when seizures continue despite two suitable drugs at adequate dose and duration; if seizures start from a single focus, surgery is evaluated.
How is the seizure focus located?
MRI alone is not enough. Real seizures are recorded on long-term video-EEG during inpatient observation; the clinical picture and electrical onset are assessed together.
Who makes the surgical decision?
The decision is not left to one physician. An epilepsy board of neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology and neuropsychology reviews all data and decides together.
Will surgery affect my speech or memory?
This risk is central to planning. Neuropsychological assessment and, when needed, functional mapping are performed; the procedure is planned to protect these areas.
Are there options if surgery is not suitable?
Yes. If the focus is inoperable or multiple, neuromodulation such as vagus nerve stimulation and a redesigned medication regimen are considered.
Can I stop my medication after surgery?
Medication is not stopped immediately. Tapering is gradual and controlled, guided by the seizure-free period and EEG findings; this can take months.
How long do I need to stay in Türkiye?
Duration depends on how long video-EEG monitoring takes. Assessment and surgery can be planned in one trip; our team gives you a realistic schedule beforehand.
How does follow-up work after I return home?
Your seizure diary and follow-up EEG results are shared remotely; tapering is coordinated with your own neurologist and our team stays reachable.
