Paralysis Treatment with Gait Robot and Hydrotherapy in Turkey

At Doruk Nilüfer the gait robot trains the correct step with many repetitions, and in the pool balance and walking work starts earlier. The programme is built around the cause of the paralysis, with movement and independence as the goal.

Treatment pathways in paralysis

How the decision is made
In paralysis, the rehabilitation programme is built around its cause, which part of the body it affects and how long it has lasted. Each cause is explained in detail on its own page. A rehabilitation physician, physiotherapists and occupational therapists set the programme together at the first assessment.
By cause of paralysis
Each cause has its own programme.

Stroke rehabilitation

Stroke is the most common cause of paralysis and usually affects one side of the body (hemiplegia). Alongside walking and arm work, the stroke programme also deals with protecting the paralysed shoulder, not noticing one side (neglect) and speech and swallowing difficulties.

Spinal cord injury

In spinal cord injury, paralysis affects the body below the level of injury: both legs at chest or lower-back level (paraplegia), and the arms too at neck level (tetraplegia). The programme is built around the level of injury and whether it is complete or incomplete.

Cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a permanent movement disorder that affects the developing brain and starts in childhood. The programme is adapted to the child; the gait robot, play-based pool therapy and family training go hand in hand.

How paralysis is treated
Two main methods: robots and water.

Robotic paralysis rehabilitation

The body-weight-supported gait robot repeats the stepping pattern correctly and many times; the upper-limb robot trains arm and hand movement through game-like tasks and measures it in every session. Whatever the cause of paralysis, the programme is built on these two robots. Robotic therapy takes place at Doruk Nilüfer.

Aquatic therapy for paralysis

Buoyancy reduces body weight, so balance and walking work that is hard on land can be done earlier in the pool and without fear of falling. In-pool exercise and aquatic strengthening are part of the programme, and a lift takes you into the pool. Aquatic therapy and the thermal pools are at Doruk Nilüfer.

Methods shared across all causes
FES · balance and posture · conventional physiotherapy.

Regaining movement

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) stimulates weak or paralysed muscles through electrodes on the skin, supporting stepping in foot drop and grasping with the hand. Balance and posture work progresses step by step from sitting balance to standing and walking.

Conventional physiotherapy completes robotic and aquatic therapy with stretching, strengthening, range-of-motion and walking exercises. Every session is supervised by a therapist and adjusted to the patient's tolerance.

Muscle stiffness and daily living

Muscle stiffness (spasticity) is common in paralysis; stretching, positioning, regular exercise and, when needed, medication aim to reduce stiffness and keep the joints moving.

Occupational therapy works on independence in dressing, eating, personal care and household tasks. The occupational therapist recommends the assistive devices you need and changes to make at home; before discharge, the patient and family receive a home programme.
