About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
What is a sternal cleft?
It is a rare condition in which the two halves of the breastbone do not fully join before birth. The cleft may be partial or complete and can reduce protection over the heart.
When is a sternal cleft operated on?
Repair is easier early on, while the chest wall is flexible. It remains possible when found later in life, though a graft or plate may be needed.
Does rib flaring need treatment?
It usually causes no health problem and can be managed without surgery, for example with exercise or bracing. Surgery is considered when it is marked and bothersome.
How is slipping rib syndrome recognized?
Pain in the lower ribs that increases with movement, sometimes with a clicking sensation, is typical. Diagnosis is mostly clinical; other causes are excluded by imaging.
Are there non-surgical options?
For slipping rib, pain relief, physiotherapy and nerve blocks come first. Surgery is considered for pain that still limits daily life despite these treatments.
How long will I stay in hospital?
The stay depends on the extent of surgery; it is usually short for limited rib procedures and may be longer for sternal repairs.
What are the possible risks?
Infection, fluid collection, air leak around the lung, ongoing pain and recurrence can occur. Risks are explained before surgery for your situation.
Can it be treated together with a pectus deformity?
Yes. When rib irregularity accompanies pectus excavatum or carinatum, it can be addressed within the same repair plan in suitable patients.
