About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
When is the Ravitch operation preferred?
It is preferred when the chest wall is rigid, the deformity is asymmetric or mixed, or Nuss is unsuitable. The decision is based on CT measurements and examination.
What does modified Ravitch mean?
It is a more limited form of the classic technique: deformed cartilage is removed with its lining preserved, the breastbone repositioned and a support bar used if needed.
Will there be a scar?
A scar remains on the front of the chest. Its position and length are planned for the deformity; in suitable patients it can be placed near the chest crease.
How long will I stay in hospital?
The stay depends on drain follow-up and pain control, and is usually between a few days and a week.
What are the possible risks?
Wound infection, fluid collection (seroma), air leak around the lung and recurrence can occur. Risks are discussed before surgery for your situation.
Is choosing Ravitch over Nuss a disadvantage?
No, the two methods suit different deformities. In a rigid, asymmetric chest, open repair allows the deformity to be corrected directly.
When can I return to normal life?
Desk work usually resumes within a few weeks. Heavy lifting and contact sports wait until bone and cartilage healing is complete, usually a few months.
Can Ravitch be done if I had surgery before?
Yes, open repair is one option for deformity that recurs after previous repair. Prior operative notes and a current CT are reviewed together.
