About diagnosis, treatment and recovery
Is surgery always needed for pectus carinatum?
No. For a flexible chest wall the first option is usually a compression brace. Surgery comes up when bracing falls short, the chest stiffens or a brace cannot be used.
What is the difference between reverse Nuss and Ravitch?
Reverse Nuss is a minimally invasive method that presses the protrusion with a bar placed in front of the breastbone. Modified Ravitch is an open repair removing deformed cartilage.
How is the right method chosen for me?
Chest flexibility, symmetry of the deformity, your age and any coexisting depression are assessed together. The decision is made with you after examination and CT.
How long will I stay in hospital?
The stay depends on the method and pain control, usually a few days. Wound care and activity rules are explained before discharge.
What are the possible risks?
Infection, fluid collection, bar displacement, air leak around the lung and recurrence can occur. Risks are discussed in advance for your situation.
How long does pain last after surgery?
Pain in the first days is managed with planned pain control. It eases markedly over the following weeks, and daily activities resume gradually.
When can I return to sports?
Light walking starts in the first weeks. Contact sports and strenuous exercise usually resume after a few months with surgeon approval, depending on the method.
Can the protrusion come back?
Although uncommon, the protrusion can become noticeable again, especially while growth continues. Check-ups therefore continue until growth is complete.
