TREATMENTS

How we treat each organ

Digestive system cancers
For digestive system cancers, treatment is chosen by the organ involved, the stage of the tumor, whether it can be removed with surgery and its molecular features. The decision is made by our board, where a surgical oncologist, a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, a gastroenterologist, an interventional radiologist and a pathologist review your case together.
Colon cancer
It has its own treatment path.

Robotic or laparoscopic surgery in early stages

In early-stage colon cancer, the aim is to remove the tumor and nearby lymph nodes with robotic or laparoscopic surgery. Chemotherapy is added according to stage and molecular features such as RAS, BRAF and MSI.

Related treatmentsRelated treatments
Rectal cancer
It has its own treatment path.

The right sequence and preserving the anus

In rectal cancer, the order of treatment is set by pelvic MRI findings and the distance of the tumor from the anus. Most patients receive radiation and chemotherapy before surgery; one aim is to preserve the anus.

Related treatmentsRelated treatments
Stomach cancer
It has its own treatment path.

Chemotherapy first or surgery first

In stomach cancer, surgery is used in early stages, and chemotherapy before and after surgery in locally advanced disease. Molecular tests such as HER2 and MSI guide the choice of drug.

Pancreatic cancer
It has its own treatment path.

Deciding whether it can be removed

In pancreatic cancer, the first question is whether the tumor can be removed with surgery; this depends on its relation to the large blood vessels. A borderline tumor may first be shrunk with chemotherapy.

Liver cancer
It has its own treatment path.

Surgery, ablation or treatment through the blood vessels

In liver cancer, treatment is chosen by the number and size of tumors, how well the liver works and your general health. Surgery, ablation, TACE and TARE, and drug therapy are planned from this assessment.

Bile duct cancer
It has its own treatment path.

Surgery and drugs by tumor site

In bile duct cancer, treatment is chosen by whether the tumor is inside the liver, at the liver entrance or at the lower end of the bile duct. Fitness for surgery and molecular tests determine the choice of drug.

Esophageal cancer
It has its own treatment path.

Radiation and chemotherapy first, then surgery

In esophageal cancer, most patients receive radiation and chemotherapy first, followed by minimally invasive or robotic surgery. The type and site of the tumor can change this order.

Related treatmentsRelated treatments
Anal cancer
At the anus; usually treated while keeping the anus.

Anus-preserving chemoradiotherapy

In anal cancer, the standard treatment is not surgery but radiation given together with chemotherapy; in most patients the anus is preserved. Radiation is delivered with TrueBeam using IMRT/VMAT, protecting the nearby tissues. If disease remains or comes back after treatment, salvage surgery is considered.

Related treatmentsRelated treatments
GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor)
In the wall of the stomach and bowel.

Surgery and targeted drugs

GIST develops from the wall of the stomach or bowel. For a limited tumor, the main treatment is removing it with robotic, laparoscopic or open surgery. A large tumor may first be shrunk with a targeted drug such as imatinib; if the risk of recurrence is high, the drug is continued after surgery. The mutation type in the tumor decides the drug.

Related treatmentsRelated treatments
Neuroendocrine tumors (NET)
From cells that can release hormones.

A personal plan by tumor grade

Neuroendocrine tumors most often occur in the bowel and pancreas, and some release hormones. For a limited tumor, surgery is the main treatment. Somatostatin analogues both control the tumor and ease hormone symptoms. When the tumor spreads to the liver, ablation, TACE and TARE are considered; the board builds the plan by tumor grade and spread.
